How to Measure a Room for Flooring

Measuring your room correctly is an important step when ordering new flooring. Accurate measurements help ensure you order the right amount of material and avoid delays during installation.

Step 1 – Measure the Length and Width
Using a tape measure, measure the length and width of the room in metres. Multiply the length by the width to calculate the total floor area.

Example:
Length: 5m
Width: 4m
Total Area: 5 × 4 = 20m²

Step 2 – Measure Irregular Areas
If your room is not a perfect rectangle, divide it into smaller rectangular sections. Measure each section separately and then add the total square metres together.

Step 3 – Add Extra for Cutting and Waste
We recommend adding 5–10% extra flooring to your total measurement to allow for cutting, trimming, and potential mistakes during installation.

Example:
Room Size: 20m²
Add 10%: 2m²
Total Flooring Needed: 22m²

Step 4 – Consider Doorways and Alcoves
Include any alcoves, closets, or doorways in your measurements if they will also be covered with flooring.
